UNLAWFUL COMMUNITY JAILS January 27, 2026 In Canada, although the law has not been amended to give police the powers to jail impoverished people who are suffering from mental illnesses, drug addiction, alcohol addiction, unemployability, and criminal history, Canadian communities are routinely incarcerating these people as paying inmates. At 3675 4 th Avenue in Port Alberni, British Columbia, Canada, up to 30 of these people are paying to be incarcerated in tool sheds that don’t have within them: toilets, shower stalls, running water, and sinks. Because these tool sheds are not up to the residential building code, and because these tool sheds are used unlawfully to house inmates, according to law, the operator(s) of these tool sheds must pay daily penalties for their ceaseless violations of the building code.
